Alaska Native Harbor Seal
Commission
                            Seldovia Seal Camp 2009
Biosampling Demonstration ; canning and seal oil preparation

Marine Biologist Anne Hoover-Miller of the Alaska  Sealife Center, along with hunter and ANHSC former
Commissioner Alfred Quijance provided a Biosample demonstration. Anne goes over the contents of the
Biosampling supply kit and Seal Camp participants follow along and were taught how to fill out the ANHSC
data forms.
Liam Riedel & Anna Clock assisted Alfred with the weighing and butchering. Thankfully there were many
eager helpers and seal camp participants were able to be fully immersed in the process with some more
excited than others to have the chance to be hands on.

ANHSC Vice Chair Lillian Elvsaas of Seldovia  & Melvin Malchoff  of Port Graham led the separating of the
fat and cutting up the fresh seal meat, and preparing the meat and blubber to be cooked and canned,
guided by respected elder Nicka Tanape Sr. of Nanwalek, Peter Anahonak Sr. of Nanwalek & Regina
Clock of Anchorage. Melvin Malchoff  and Kevin Seville of Nanwalek were chaperones, generously
volunteering their time to make sure kids from Nanwalek and Port Graham were able to attend the Seldovia
Seal Camp .
